Leadership Quotes That Don’t Quite Work For Us

Our Blog

Occasionally, we find inspirational quotes that have a grain of truth, but don’t quite “hit their marks,” as actors say. We found the following in a Leadership Quotes calendar for 2012, and wondered just how they applied to the environment in which leaders must work in the 21st Century

“Stop thinking, and end your problems.”

~Lao-Tsu

We are all guilty of “overthink,” which leads to analysis paralysis. But the idea that not thinking a problem through makes it go away seems unproductive, to say the least!

“Of that which you see, believe only a little. Of that which you are told, nothing.”

~Spanish proverb

We agree that you need to challenge assumptions and other “accepted wisdom” when exploring data and making decisions. That is the spirit of our Pursuit of Truth leadership philosophy. But the blanket condemnation of anything that others might tell you is a bit over the top! We prefer the old Russian proverb that President Reagan borrowed so famously: “Trust, but verify.”

“To know and act are one and the same.”

~Samurai Maxim

Acquiring knowledge before acting is a critical leadership need (and skill). Yet, in our experience plenty of people know quite a bit but take no action. You could assert that “taking no action is an action,” but that insight doesn’t tie directly to this quote either.

Finally, you have to take action with only partial knowledge in many circumstances. A great leader expands his or her knowledge relentlessly so that what decisions they make are as informed as possible.

Perhaps this quote would work better as “To know and to act should be one and the same.” (We wonder if it actually meant that in the original Japanese.)

What do you think? Are we off base with our view on these quotes? What insight do they provide you? Your perspective may differ from ours, and we would love to hear it!
