Kickin’ the Tires Ain’t Enough

Every Eagle Scout knows that before you embark on a road trip, you need to do a bit more than kick the tires and top off the gas tank. When you got the friends and family loaded up, the last think you want is for your trip to be derailed by a preventable issue. That’s why it’s so important to check your dashboard, you must know where you are and be able to identify and adapt to any negative feedback. Not many people enjoy flying down the freeway with a broken dashboard or watching a football game with a broken clock and scoreboard. But have you thought about work? (do you do that at work?) How do you know if you’re team is winning?

The most effective Leaders have the appropriate Performance Feedback Loops and Dashboard in place. They are also asking and giving the “right” kind of feedback in the right “way” at the “right” time. Doing so also helps with improving relationships—less guessing and more focus and clarity on what matters. Below are some questions that will aid in the development and/or refinement of your Performance Feedback Loops and Dashboard:

  • Where are you now?
  • Are key action items explicit?
  • Are you tracking the right things?
  • What don’t you have?
  • What don’t you use?
  • Who has access?
  • Who needs to know what?
