Happy Independence Day
In the United States, we are embarking on a long holiday weekend, as our July 4th Independence Day holiday lands on Thursday. A number of companies committed to employee engagement took an active approach to furthering engagement by making the Friday business day “optional.” These organizations saw a chance to show they care about their employee’s well being. Some of the methods for leveraging July 5 were:
- Balance work schedules to ensure coverage, but allow all who wanted to take a vacation or PTO day to do so.
- Encourage taking the day off, as the productivity gain from refreshed employees next week more than compensates for the lost productivity of Friday.
- Closing company offices that are not continuing operations both Thursday and Friday. Balancing the free day off for those employees with an extra free day for other employees who do have to work the Friday, to be taken on a floating basis.
Not every organization had a formal plan for this isolated business day, but a recognition that taking the Friday off to make a four-day weekend is a GOOD thing rather than a bad thing, is the key mindset to adopt to show you care about the physical and emotional mindsets of those who work for you.
Have wonderful weekends, however you plan to celebrate it!
